Some guy with a phone.

Which way is North?

These days our phones are far more than just phones. They have sensors in them that can do amazing things. Most Android phones have a digital compass or magnetometer built in. That way when an application can know exactly where it is pointing.

A few of the apps that use the digital compass include:

Google Sky Map

Smart Compass

Google Maps

Satellite AR

If you are like me you may have noticed that the applications don’t always show which way I’m pointing correctly. The secret is that the compass needs to be calibrated every time you use it. Fortunately it is easy to do if you know how. This video shows a great way how.
